Sixth-Remaining Northern White Rhino Dies

Angalifu, a northern white rhino housed at the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park, has died of old age at 44. With his death the subspecies draws closer to extinction, as only five remain.

Angalifu was housed at San Diego Zoo with another elderly northern white rhino named Nola. The pair, however, was not able to produce offspring, and the outlook for babies elsewhere looks grim.

All hopes for offspring rest with a single male named Sudan living on a reserve in Kenya with two females. Dvur Kralove Zoo, in the Czech Republic, meanwhile, is home to one elderly female.

The northern white rhino has been brought to the brink of extinction by poachers, who kill the animals for their horns, which are sold in markets in East Asia, where rhino horn is believed to have medicinal value.
